Excerpt:

There it was again, that squeaky floorboard on the first landing of the staircase. Laura stopped reading and turned down the radio, expecting to hear the voices of her two roommates. Instead, there was silence - not what she'd normally expect if George and Hannah had just arrived home.

She switched off the lamp, slipped out of bed, and stood in the dark, tense and waiting. More squeaking - this time in the short hallway leading from the stairs to her attic room. The doorknob rattled and Laura dived into the closet, pulling the door closed behind her.

Peeking out the crack of an opening, she tensed even more as two narrow beams of light pierced the darkness of her room followed by stealthy footsteps.

"She's not here," a deep voice said in Spanish.

"She must be hiding," a higher-pitched but still male voice replied, and after a moment he continued. "Look, the bed's still warm and the radio's playing. Here's a book."

She watched yellow beams dance on the walls and floor of her room within her range of vision. What were two men doing in her bedroom at midnight on a Friday?
